Genesis Gala

by the Genesis Editorial Staff

After school earlier this month, the annual Genesis gala was held on the roof, where students in grades 6-12, read their newly published pieces from the magazine. Students, teachers and administrators received copies and enjoyed reading along in the audience! This year’s issue includes writing and art from both this school year and last year as, COVID-19 delayed our process.
This year’s staff did a wonderful job of carrying a heavy responsibility. Junior Editor, Sophia Martinez says,  “Although the process was initially overwhelming, our hard work paid off in the end. We felt accomplished when we first laid our eyes upon the published magazine. Our Layout Editors, Ryan Borkowsky and Wells Labbé did a great job of making the magazine look professional and visually appealing.” Co-Editor-in-Chief, Emily Singh adds, “This year’s editing process was very exciting and I loved piecing together this issue. Organizing the gala for this year was very fun. Although it was informal, it was amazing to be able to celebrate all the hard work that went into this issue.”

The gala was held more informally than in previous years, but still, many people attended, teachers and students alike. Everyone enjoyed pizza and cookies on the roof as we celebrated the creative efforts of all the writers and artists whose pieces were accepted into this year’s issue. Eleventh grader Alexander DeHaas, reflected on his reading and said, “It was nice, you know, to read my piece and to see and hear the other people in the magazine read their work aloud.” All the readers at the event read their work with an admirable amount of confidence. Another reader from the gala was eleventh grader Kimberly Pineda who said, “There was something cathartic in actually reading the prose I had written, rather than just seeing them printed on the page.”

The Genesis Staff thoroughly enjoyed going through everyone’s work and putting together the magazine. It was wonderful to have the gala back after two years of COVID, to celebrate this achievement.  We look forward to reading new submissions in the fall! Read the full issue here!
