Application Process

Admissions Update
York Prep is now fully back-to-school (click here for the latest on our reopening plan).  We are prepared for new ways to meet and engage with prospective families this fall.  The Admissions season for the 2021-22 school year is officially in motion, with our application now available online.  After submitting an application you will be prompted to select a Zoom interview time slot and upload all supporting documents. If conditions allow, we will invite your child to visit York for an informal assessment.
We are looking forward to getting to know you and your child – and helping you to get to know us – through a safe, welcoming, and transparent admissions process focused around our applying families' needs and questions.

During this unique admissions season, we are changing as little as possible. However, York Prep has decided to make a few adjustments for 2020:
  • formal standardized testing, ISEE or SSAT, is not required, but can be submitted
  • all interviews will be held virtually
  • no creative writing piece required
  • digital materials will be sent to families for an informal academic assessment conducted during virtual interviews
All Jumpstart applications must be supported by an up to date Neuropsychological and/or psychoeducational evaluation.
In addition to an evaluation, an IEP can be submitted as another supporting document.
Over the coming weeks and months, we encourage you to reach out to the admissions team at any time, join us for a virtual open house, view the virtual school tour (coming soon), and look over the digital admissions materials.  We look forward to getting the chance to “meet” and talk soon.
York Prep seeks motivated students who can benefit from our challenging, personalized, and current curriculum. We give special weight to not only the academic accomplishments of students but also their personal character: students who share our values of caring, responsibility, trust, and fairness.

Applicants are urged to apply by January 8th for February ISAAGNY notification. Applications received after this date will be considered according to the space available.

We are currently accepting applications for Grades 6-12.
Please contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!

Admissions Step-by-Step

List of 7 items.

  • 1. Attend an Open House

Learn more about upcoming York Prep Open Houses here.
  • 2. Submit the Application

Submit the application, including the application fee section, online.

The application requests a photograph of the applicant. We prefer a photo that clearly shows the candidate’s face.
  • 3. Arrange for Testing

For the 2020 - 2021 admissions year, York Prep is test-optional. Applicants can take the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) or the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT).  You must list York Prep as a school to which you want scores sent.
  • 4. Request a Transcript

Request a transcript from the applicant’s current school when you request a recommendation.

The form makes it possible for academic records to be sent to us. The transcript we receive should include work from the fall term, as well as all work from the previous year or years.
  • 5. Reference Forms

Plan to ask your current teachers of English and Math, as well as your guidance counselor/dean to fill out the reference forms.

You do not need to make this request until you have scheduled an interview. You can obtain the reference form after you submit an application.

We would like the references to be completed very late in the fall or very early in winter. You are welcome to submit additional references.
  • 6. Educational Evaluation

You must submit with your application a current (within two - three years) educational evaluation in order to be eligible for the Jump Start program. If the evaluation is not current, we will request an updated version.

  • 7. Tour and Interview

We must have received your completed application form before an interview can be scheduled. You will be able to self select an interview time slot through the application portal.

All application components should be received at York Prep by Friday, January 8th.

For applicants who have complete folders by January 8th, you will receive a decision by the ISAAGNY deadline, which varies each year (typically mid-February).

For International Applicants:

F-1 Student Visas: York Prep is a day school located in the heart of NYC. York does not provide boarding or allow homestays for international students. All international students must be living with immediate family members while in New York. York is an SEVP-certified school. If your child requires a Form I-20, he/she must be enrolled and the full tuition must be paid before a Form I-20 is issued.
