Lessons in Fantasy and Reality

by Hilary Hersh

While reading the fantasy classic The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, English 6-2 paused for a little science lesson. In the novel, the White Witch has condemned the land of Narnia to an eternal winter. But when the hero Aslan approaches the kingdom, his mere presence causes the ice and snow to melt and flowers to bloom:  Spring arrives.
At that point, the students engaged in a cross-curricular project. Recalling what they had learned in science about the true cause of the change in seasons, they embarked on some additional research. They then explained the scientific cause in both drawings and captions using cause and effect language.  Their drawings are now hanging in the classroom.
