Cinco De Mayo

This week Ms. Sarasohn’s classes learned about Cinco de Mayo. Before the lesson about the history behind the holiday began, Ms. Sarasohn presented a little true/false quiz to see if what the class thought they knew was correct. Here is a modified quiz for everyone to test their knowledge about the holiday.
The answer to every statement you see in the photo is actually false. Many people think that Cinco de Mayo is the day that Mexico celebrates its independence, but they actually celebrate their Independence Day on September 16th. What many people don’t realize is that Cinco de Mayo is actually a big celebration in the USA but not very big in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May) is the day that Mexico surprisingly defeated the more powerful French army at the Battle of Puebla when the French invaded because Mexico could not repay their debts. This David and Goliath type story was used by Chicano activists in the 1960s as an example of Mexico defeating a dominant European power. As a result the holiday grew in popularity here, especially when alcohol companies realized how much they could profit. Today Cinco de Mayo has become a day to celebrate and revere Mexican heritage, but in Mexico it is a minor holiday and only really recognized in the city of Puebla.
