Head's Thoughts: August 2023

A question I’ve been asked countless times these last few months since stepping into the York Prep Headship, has been “What will summer look like?” For educators, like their students, summer is a time for rest and rejuvenation, but also a time for preparation. It is a time to reflect on the school year that has passed and dig in to building what is to come.
For me and the leadership team, this summer has been a busy one. As we shared in our mid-summer update, our focus has been on updating and restoring our facilities and integrating new technology to ensure a smooth and streamlined experience for faculty, students and families alike. We have been building our new leadership team structures and continuing to strengthen and evolve our programming to meet the needs of our students.

As summer winds down and we begin to complete our projects for the fall, we are also thinking not just about the York Prep of 2023-24, but of the York Prep three, five, ten, and fifty years from now.

The two central questions of the first year of any headship are: Where are we now? Where are we going? While I am fortunate to be stepping into this role after seven years of knowing and loving this community, I am keenly aware that the best vision for the future is one that is shared.

I am thrilled that we will embark together on the creation of a new Strategic Plan, a roadmap for the future of York Prep. This collaborative work will allow us to articulate a shared vision for our school that both preserves the legacy of York’s history, while ensuring we continue to meet the ever-changing needs of our students so that they can thrive in the world they are living in today, and the world they will inherit.

Over the next year, we will engage the entire community in examining all aspects of our school: our strengths, our areas for growth, and our opportunities. We will host informal coffee talks to learn from our parents and caregivers about their hopes for their children. We will conduct surveys with our families, students, alums, and faculty; and we will facilitate focus groups to listen and learn all that we can about what our students need to forge their path to success here at 40 West 68th, and beyond.

I look forward to working closely with all of you as we develop a shared vision for the future of our school.
