York Prep Athletics Insider: Sasha Abelson-Shaer

Sasha Abelson-Shaer is a senior basketball student manager for the Varsity Boys Basketball team at York Prep. Sasha handles the video content in-game, as well as managing other daily duties for the program. He is also a star baseball player in the spring, having started on varsity since his freshman year. Sasha dives into what this basketball season has been like.

Coach Turi: Sasha, you are the manager for the basketball team, tell us what you do for the program?

Sasha: As the team manager I try to do anything and everything they ask of me to do to the best of my abilities. If the coaches or players need something, I am at the ready to be able to assist.

Coach Turi: There are a lot of duties being a manager for a team, what are some of the keys to be successful?

Sasha: Not being phased by the life going on around you and living in the moment. Playing baseball my entire life I know you leave the non baseball things off the field. With managing it's the same, your head has to be in the game with the rest of the team. Doing anything the team needs you to do, anything the coaches ask of me and bringing energy on the bench.

Coach Turi: How has the season gone so far from a video streaming standpoint?

Sasha: It's been a massive learning curve. I’ve been doing photography for a long part of my life but never filming. At first I was always focused on where the ball is going but realized there's so much more to the game that one can capture. The cuts, the screens, the off ball movement, all of it is something you would want on film. It's extremely interesting, I look at the game completely differently now when I watch it at home. Filming the games has taught me basketball in its pure beautiful form.

Coach Turi: How does what you are doing translate to what you want to do in college and professionally?

Sasha: Hopefully in the future when I go into sports management what I’ve been doing now will translate a lot. I would say what I'm doing now translates to a lot of professions though, the hustle, being the one those go to to get things done, all of it will translate later on in life. In addition Mr. Shure has taught me a lot about what it means to respect your opponents.

Coach Turi: What are some of your favorite moments so far this season?

Sasha: Beating Columbia Grammar was definitely the highpoint not just of the season but of my High School life. Walking back into my old school and seeing the people I grew up with, walking back into my old gym, old locker room, I felt six-years old again and very proud of what the team accomplishe.

Coach Turi: We are in playoff mode now, any predictions for the rest of the season?

Sasha: State Championship.
