Upper School Curriculum
English
At York Prep, we believe that strong writing begins with strong foundations. Our English teachers incorporate Hochman's Writing Revolution to build essential writing skills from the ground up.
Through targeted explicit instruction in sentence structure, organization, planning, and reading comprehension, students gain the tools and the confidence they need to express themselves clearly and effectively across disciplines.
Upper School English courses are as dynamic as our students, led by teachers with expertise in everything from poetry and screenwriting to investigative journalism. Across all classes, students engage in close reading and thoughtful analysis of a wide range of texts, sharpening their critical thinking and deepening their appreciation for language and ideas. Whether crafting an analytical essay or experimenting with creative voice, every student is supported in developing the skills necessary to communicate their ideas.
Math
At York Prep, we believe that all students deserve a strong foundation in mathematics and the ability to see how math shapes the world around them.
Our Mathematics Department has developed its own innovative, flexible program that meets students where they are and challenges them to grow. Students are placed into ability-based courses that ensure the right level of support and rigor for each learner.
From building core math skills to exploring real-world applications, our curriculum helps students develop both confidence and fluency. Instructional practices and curricular materials are continually updated to reflect current research and best practices, while also preparing students to engage thoughtfully with the mathematical demands of a rapidly changing world.
Whether solving equations, analyzing data, or modeling real-life problems, students learn not just how to do math, but why it matters.
World Languages
In today’s global and interconnected world, learning another language is more than an academic skill, it’s a gateway to understanding other cultures, perspectives, and ways of life.
At York Prep, our World Languages Department embraces this belief, helping students develop both language proficiency and cultural fluency.
We know that learning a new language takes determination, consistency, and curiosity. Through engaging instruction, immersive experiences, and meaningful exposure to global traditions and customs, students gain not only the skills to communicate effectively, but also a deeper appreciation for the diverse communities that shape our world.
Upper School students can choose to study Spanish, French, Mandarin, or American Sign Language (ASL), each offering a unique lens into the rich tapestry of global cultures.
History
At York Prep, we believe that understanding the past is essential to understanding the world we live in today.
Our History Department challenges students to think critically about how events, movements, and decisions have shaped society, and how this knowledge can help us navigate the complexities and conflicts of the present.
Through a curriculum grounded in physical geography, historical research, expository writing, and oral presentation, students develop the skills to ask meaningful questions, evaluate evidence, and engage thoughtfully in discussion. A key part of this process is learning how to identify and use reliable sources, helping students distinguish fact from opinion and become more informed, responsible thinkers.
By exploring a wide range of cultures, time periods, and global perspectives, students also build empathy and cultural competency—skills essential for understanding others and contributing to a more just, connected world.
This strong academic foundation prepares students for advanced electives such as AP American Government, Archaeology, Comparative World Religions, Economics, Art History, Latin American History, Revolutionaries and Reactionaries, and AP African American Studies.
Science
At York Prep, science is more than a subject it’s a way of thinking, exploring, and making sense of the world.
Our Science Department offers a dynamic, cross-disciplinary curriculum with a core mission: to ignite intellectual curiosity and foster scientific literacy in every student.
Through hands-on labs, real-world problem-solving, and interactive exploration of key scientific concepts, students are challenged to approach problems as opportunities for growth and discovery. Our program emphasizes innovative thinking and inquiry-based learning, helping students develop the skills to ask meaningful questions, test new ideas, and collaborate effectively.
What truly sets our program apart is our faculty. Many of our science teachers bring professional experience from research labs, fieldwork, and industry into the classroom. Their real-world expertise inspires students to see science as an evolving and essential part of life and equips them with the confidence and leadership skills to apply it well beyond York Prep.
From biology, chemistry and physics to AP Environmental Science, Science in the Arts, The Science of Cooking, Anatomy and Physiology and neuroscience, our students are exposed to a range of scientific concepts through our core curriculum and wide-range of elective offerings.
Physical Education
At York Prep, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in a student’s overall development to support not only physical fitness, but also mental health, resilience, and a sense of balance in daily life.
In grades 9–12, students continue to refine sport-specific skills through focused practice while also deepening their understanding of the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. Our program emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance. Whether competing on a team or developing their individual strengths and skills, students build confidence, learn how to set and achieve personal goals, and explore ways to stay active that align with their interests. By encouraging lifelong habits of movement, health, and well-being, York Prep’s physical education program helps students lay the foundation for a lifetime of physical and mental vitality.
