York Prep students don’t just attend classes here. Whether their interests lie in club or varsity sports, student government or community service, theater productions or yearbook, ski jaunts or international travel, York Prep athletics and activities offer an extraordinarily diverse range of opportunities for personal satisfaction and growth.

If a student has a passion and the willingness to work hard to pursue it, we can support them. Given our hallmarks of talented faculty and encouraging environment, if an activity is not yet offered, it only takes a few dedicated students and a faculty advisor to make it happen.

The York Prep Panthers are known for more than the championship banners and trophies in our gym. Our school’s values are not left behind in the locker room. All participants in York Prep athletics compete and play in an environment where they feel safe and respected personally as well as physically.

The interschool teams of the York Prep athletics program are known not only for winning, but for caring about their teammates and treating everyone on and off the court with respect.

Clubs and Activities

Student Club Full List

From beekeeping on the roof to hiking in the great outdoors –York Prep’s impressive range of clubs and activities satisfies a wide range of student interests.

Two major theater productions are staged each year, involving the talents of York Prep students in costume design, set design and construction, lighting, and acting.

School clubs meet during the day and in the afternoons after regular classes. Some of the offerings include Science Club, WYRK Television, Rock Band, Photography Club, Environmental Club, and Model United Nations.

Students exercise their creative writing, graphic design, and photographic talents by being part of the yearbook staff, the school newspaper, and the school literary magazine. Genesis, our literary and art magazine, won nationally acclaimed awards in 1997, 2010, and 2011.  Another “hands-on” activity is the Student Government, which operates the student-staffed school store and organizes frequent fundraisers, assemblies, bake sales and the annual Halloween festivities.

Faculty-supervised trips are offered throughout the fall and spring terms. York Prep students attend the theater, enjoy performances at the Metropolitan Opera, frequent the plethora of local museums, take ski weekends, visit Washington, D.C., and travel each year to a foreign country. Students have visited a number of lands abroad, including: Austria, China, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and the Czech Republic.

Community Service

At York Prep, we foster a sense of community among our students. Along with their focus on academics, students gain valuable experiences through community service. Community service facilitates civic engagement and makes students aware of and sensitive to the needs of humanity.

York Prep students are very active in service within their local communities. Some have expanded their volunteer efforts to include developing countries where they have assisted in the construction of schoolhouses, bridges, and parks. Our students are also encouraged to get involved in school-wide activities and in-school service such as theatre, the school newspaper, school yearbook, student government, our environmental club, sports, and peer tutoring to name a few.

York Prep students have recently completed service for the following organizations: New York Botanical Garden, Lenox Hill Hospital, Central Park Conservancy, ASPCA, York Environmental Club, New York Aquarium, Wildlife Conservation Society, New York Cares, American Red Cross, Children for Children, Citywide Youth Opera, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Volunteers for Israel, JCC, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, UNICEF, Congregation Rodeph Sholom, Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, Food Bank For New York City, and Habitat for Humanity.
