The Afrofuturist Period Room at The Met

by Sarah Davis

In November, students from both Dr. Davis's and Mr. Levanthal’s 11th grade American Literature classes visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the new Afrofuturist Period Room. Curators constructed a space that imagines what a home from the lost community of Seneca Village might look like if it had not been cleared to make way for Central Park. Items in the room range from 19th century historical artifacts to newly commissioned artwork that incorporate influences of the past, the present, and an imagined future. Students also walked a path through Central Park where Seneca Village was once a thriving community of free African-American New Yorkers.
