Our World

by Talya Plush, 11th grade

Since sophomore year I have been involved in the Scholars Program. The program allows for students such as myself to take part in additional courses of our choosing. During first semester, I was able to participate in the course “Protest Literature” led by Dr. Davis. The course focused around novels and poems discussing injustice faced by African American and other minority groups.

For our final project we were assigned to write a poem about an example of injustice we've faced or seen others face. In my final poem I decided to discuss an example of injustice women of all ages experience, catcalling. No matter a woman's age or appearance some men in our society choose to make remarks on women resulting in discomfort and fear. It is so normalized in our society that women have learned to brush off these comments and learn to deal with them. While we should not feel afraid to walk down a block due to how one is dressed. I decided to take this example and create a poem as my personal form of protest.

Our world
by Talya Plush

I lift up the strap of my leopard tank
It's too short I think to myself
People will think its too much
But it's not too much
It's just a shirt

Now pants
These black ones are cute
There too tight I think to myself
People will think its too much
But it's not too much
There just pants

I feel good in this outfit I think to myself
I sense a glare as I walk down the block
The whisper from two older men discuss my appearance

That's disgusting I think to myself

Why do I feel unsafe wearing a tank top and pants
Why do I feel uncomfortable in my own environment

It's all unfair
It all doesn't make sense
But that's our world right?
