Athlete: Julia Dolan (Senior)
Sport: Girls’ Varsity Volleyball (Captain)
Highlights: GISAL Volleyball Champions 2006- 2008
It is only fitting that York Prep’s most successful student-athlete is selected as our first Athlete of the Week. In addition to her three GISAL Championships (along with the Coach’s Awards and M.V.P. Awards), Julia Dolan played club volleyball for the Brooklyn Shamrocks and serves as the assistant coach for York Prep’s Boys’ Varsity Volleyball Team.
Julia is a product of York Prep’s volleyball program and started playing on the middle school team in 8th grade. In 9th grade, she was the only freshman selected to the 2006 varsity team. “Julia didn’t play much her first year, but she put in a lot of time and effort to get stronger and really learn the game,” said Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Coach Chris Durnford. “Her first real appearance for the team was in a ‘must-win’ play-off qualifier. We knew she had good skills, but there is no way to predict how someone will handle the pressure in that kind of situation. Julia stepped up and took charge. I was really impressed with her confidence and athleticism. Julia played a crucial role in winning the team’s 2006 GISAL Championship.”
Julia has solidified her role as setter and team leader and has been a significant factor in the team’s successes for the past three years. She is an outstanding player and a fierce competitor. In addition to her superior volleyball skills, Julia displays great team leadership on and off the court. She is really good about keeping the team calm and settling things down when it gets a little crazy.
When asked about the team and the upcoming season, Julia said, “I think we have a great team this year. I love playing with Anna [Lieberman], Madison [Pappas], and Honour [Masters]. I think Marissa [Velazquez] and Taylor [Brown] are both really great, too. This is my senior year and I would love to win a fourth Championship, but it is too early to tell. Besides, I don’t want to jinx it.”
Congratulations on being York’s first Athlete of the Week and good luck on the upcoming season!
