To promote AIDS Awareness at York, a school assembly on February 28 focused on the recognition that AIDS still plagues many parts of the world and that each person can help support the relief effort.
Guest speaker Dr. Luciana Ciantia, Project Manager and Clinical Coordinator of the Increased Access and Coverage of Essential HIV/AIDS Services Project in Uganda, spoke about her life and work with HIV patients, which include both adults and children.
Jonathan Fields and Riro Maniscalco, musicians from last month’s AIDS Relief Benefit Concert, introduced the event with songs reflecting the African-American tradition.
To raise funds for the relief effort, York students each paid $2.00 to dress down. On sale were AIDS Awareness wristbands and beautiful handmade necklaces made from newspaper by Ugandan women. After the school matched the amount collected, the total came to more than $2000.
York Prep is grateful to Dr. Luciana Ciantia, Jonathan Fields, and Riro Maniscalco for their inspiring visit. Thanks also to students, faculty, and staff who contributed to such a worthy cause.
