York Prep Fencing Instructor Leads Student to North American Cup

Like York Prep middle schooler Ethan Kushnerik, Slava Zingerman started fencing at a young age. Slava has been a competitive fencer since 1994, being an eleven-time Israel National Champion in all age categories (Cadet, Junior and Senior) and even a member of the Cadet, Junior and Senior Israeli National Teams.

Just like Ethan, Slava took part in numerous National and International competitions including World Cups, European and World Championships, won many medals in Junior World Cups, and finished third in the FIE World Cup ranking in 2003. Slava was offered a full scholarship to Wayne State University in 2006 and became a three-time NCAA Champion in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He graduated with an electrical engineering degree in 2011 and, five years later, was inducted into the Wayne State University Hall of Fame.

Since graduating Slava has coached in New York City at Manhattan FC and New York Fencing Academy, where he first started working with a young Ethan Kushnerik. Ethan has had great international success, most recently winning the North American Cup in Salt Lake City, Utah and receiving his D 2016 rating at the second biggest fencing championship event in the USA. Having attracted his classmates to the sport, now both Ethan and Slava have officially brought their love of fencing to York Prep. The school has started a new fencing club helmed by Coach Slava which has already gained a lot of attention from students in the Upper School who meet every Wednesday during lunch. Congratulations to Ethan and welcome to York Prep, Slava!
