Junior, Marshall Richardson, has accomplished a feat none can recall in any recent memory of York Prep’s rich athletic history.
On a very windy and cold Saturday morning in March, athletes from across the state of New York came to compete in the winter Track and Field Championships at Ocean Breeze on Staten Island. The event was buzzing with excitement from the start.
As the day progressed, the nerves were filling the air and the excitement elevated three fold. Marshall was placed in the second heat overall in the 55-meter dash. Runners came from different leagues, sections and state levels, which included former and present record holders. Marshall knew he had to run a great race to compete at this level.
The runners took their mark, got set and as the gun went off, you can see the smoke on the track as the athletes increased their speed, as they got closer to the finish line. Marshall, running as fast as possible, could not keep up with the front-runner of the heat. Within, seven seconds, the whole race was finished.
Even though the outcome did not fair well for Marshall this go around, York Prep’s community is very proud with his accomplishments this winter season. He will continue to train hard for spring track with another championship run in mind. Congratulations Marshall and Coach Bernal for a great winter season!
