York Prep Science Department Chair and Upper School teacher Dr. Nicole Grimes, along with 19 other educators, attended a White House Social on May 7 in honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week 2014. These 20 teachers from across the nation engaged in an intimate dialogue concerning educational issues with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Kumar Garg from the Office of Science and Technology Policy, and other senior education advisors to the current administration.

The invited educators also enjoyed a White House tour and a private luncheon with Dr. Biden, after which they had a photo opportunity with her in her office. The visit ended with the educators receiving a private peek at the First Lady’s garden on the South Lawn led by the White House Head Pastry Chef.

“I was beyond shocked and yet thrilled at the honor to represent the state of New York and my school York Prep,” said Dr. Grimes. “It was an unforgettable experience and I will always treasure it.”
