Along Fifth Avenue, amid the hustle and bustle of city shoppers and patrons gazing at the iconic holiday window displays, the York Prep Vocal Ensemble performed a medley of festive songs and spread holiday cheer at Lord & Taylor last Thursday, December 8th. If you were fortunate enough to be shopping on the fifth floor of this historic landmark and one of New York City’s oldest retail stores, then you stumbled upon a real treat.
The talented performers included senior Max Nusbaum, freshmen JessieJean Newman-Getzler and Liza Beinus, and 7th grader Ellis Hemmerdinger. Led by the music director, Mr. Scottie Hawley, the students performed ensemble pieces such as, “Let It Snow”, “Ding Dong Merrily on High” ,“Happy Christmas (War is Over)” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain”. The sets also included solos, specifically “Last Christmas (I Gave You My Heart)” sung soulfully by Liza; “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” sung with a zestful flare by JessieJean; and “Silent Night” earnestly sung by Ellis. Duets such as “Chanukah, O Chanukah/S’vivon Medley” sung beautifully by Liza and Jessie Jean, along with a jazzier version of the pop hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” caused quite a stir. In addition, the audience was stunned by the moving and powerful piece, “The Prayer” by Max and Mr. Hawley. Shoppers stopped, took pictures and often asked, “Will they be performing again tomorrow?”
In between sets, Scottie played the piano beautifully and even sang the crowd-pleaser, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
Once again, the talented students who help make up the York Prep Ensemble left the crowd wanting more. Despite the fact that students are busy prepping for midterms, this group of talented beings made time in their busy schedules to represent their school — just another reason to marvel at the community of students who make up York Prep!
