In a triumphant return of golf at the varsity level, York Prep swept the field to win the Big Apple Championship. York golfers had the low gross scores throughout the season, including victories over Churchill, Dwight, Winston, Lycée Français, and Claremont. In the championship match, York decisively beat Birch Wathen Lenox, with a low gross (combined score) of 183 against 198 for Birch.
York’s stellar performers, led by Coach Robin Stark, were Robert Borkow, Will Lane, Stefan Oliva, and Michael Schwartz. (Aaron Niecestro, also part of the team, did not compete.) The quartet overcame adverse conditions on the links, playing every match but one in the rain. Stefan Oliva was awarded Most Valuable Player, while Mike Schwartz received the Coach’s Award. According to Coach Stark, Mike served as a role model to younger players, supporting them and demonstrating good golfing etiquette.
York had played at the club level in recent years and clearly was right in deciding this was the time to resume varsity play. “I am thrilled to bring the first Varsity Golf banner and championship trophy to York Prep,” said Coach Stark. “This is a real incentive for other boys and girls who are golfers to join the team.”
Congratulations to Coach Stark and her team for their groundbreaking year!
