The 2010 GISAL season kicks off this week with two tough games for York Prep. The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team has been practicing very hard for a month to get back into championship form, and players are now ready to take on their GISAL competition.
Pre-season scrimmages against Evangel Christian and Horace Mann helped to fine-tune York’s game and gave the team a chance to see new players like sophomore Olivia and senior Emily in action.
The first game of the year is at home against Dwight on Wednesday, September 22. With tall players, Dwight is very competitive; it will be an exciting team to start off with. On Thursday, September 24, York meets Little Red/Elizabeth Irwin. LREI is a great team with a roster of skillful players, and we are sure it’s going to be a good volleyball game.
This season, York has an incredibly talented group of girls. Four new players join the varsity squad: freshman Jenna, sophomores Olivia and Taryn, and senior Emily. Senior Anna has stepped up to take on the role of setter and has demonstrated remarkable chemistry with big hitters like Marissa, Madison, and Honour. Isabella has matured into an outstanding hitter and had the opposition ducking for cover in York’s pre-season scrimmages (17 kills against Evangel Christian).
Taylor and Rebecca continue to play outstanding defense and developed their hitting tremendously over the summer. Seniors Willa and Nikki continue to improve their hitting and will provide much needed height to York’s front row attack.
Given the team’s size, skill level, and experience, this year’s varsity volleyball squad is one of the most gifted teams the school has ever put together. York is running a really aggressive offense; with its killer attacks and “never-give-up” defense, the team is going to play some truly thrilling volleyball this season.
