Sixth Grader Plays at New York Open Exhibition

Sixth grader Summer Chandler had the honor of being selected to play at the opening night exhibition game of the first New York Open ATP World Tour Tennis Tournament. At NYCB Live’s Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum this past Sunday, Summer played in a mixed doubles match with three of her academy mates. Famed tennis players John McEnroe, Sloane Stephens, Genie Bouchard and James Blake also took to the courts for both singles and mixed doubles matches.

According to Summer’s mother “it was really cute and great crowd despite the inclement weather.” The arrival of this ATP World Tour event marks the first time in its 45-year history that the Coliseum will play host to a sanctioned tennis tournament. The week long tournament ends Sunday, February 18 so it’s not too late to check it out for yourself. Kids aged 12 and under are welcome for free with a paid adult for all sessions from February 11-16.
