SGO Election: Democracy in Action

On Thursday, September 24, the Student Government Organization hosted Meet the Candidates, a two-period assembly affording the York Prep community the opportunity to learn more about the students running for office. This year the available positions include two co-presidents (both of whom must be seniors and members of SGO), a vice president (who must also be a senior), a treasurer, a secretary, and grade presidents for each upper school class.

At the start of 6th period, teachers accompanied their students to the York Prep gymnasium where they were able to hear each candidate’s reason for running. For the candidates however, this assembly was more than just an exercise in public speaking but rather the culmination of a quite difficult campaigning process. Those seeking office had less than a week to gather the necessary teacher recommendations,  apply with SGO student advisors Mrs. Brittany McKinney and Ms. Melissa Feibusch, as well as lobby for votes.

Upon completion of the assembly, student hopefuls skipped the shaking of hands and kissing of babies and went straight to the voting. Teachers returned students to their 6th period classrooms where they voted electronically with the use of the classroom computer as well as laptops. Thanks to the technology that has been so thoroughly integrated into every York classroom, the seamless voting process guaranteed election results in less than 24 hours.
