York Prep’s Same Sky Club was invited to a United Nations Global Conversation on January 15 to discuss the genocide in Rwanda and the incredible progress made by the affected women in the past 20 years. Hosted by the Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations and the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, this event featured the participation of United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson and retired Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, an advocate for human rights and genocide prevention.
Several 10th grade students attended, accompanied by club advisors Mrs. Sammantha Farkas and Mrs. Brittany McKinney. “I learned that even though some things can be prevented, the necessary measures are not taken and the results can be tragic,” said Lily.
The Same Sky Club was developed at York Prep due to student interest in learning more about trade-not-aid initiatives and their importance and value to today’s teenagers. The Same Sky Club is connected with the Same Sky non-profit organization (https://www.samesky.com/), a trade-not-aid organization that believes in giving women a hand up, rather than a hand-out. Same Sky helps women in Rwanda, Zambia, and New Jersey by ensuring that the women in the Rwandan, Zambian, and American collectives are gainfully employed making beautifully handcrafted jewelry to support themselves and their families.
