The entire York Prep freshman class, along with four teachers and three parent chaperones, attended Physics Day at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ, on April 26. This was the first time that 9th grade physical science students from York Prep attended this popular annual event at the theme park.
One of the highlights this year was a presentation hosted by Six Flags Chief Corporate Engineer Larry Chickola on all aspects of roller coaster design, including topics from basic physics to restraints and vehicles.
Along with enjoying the park’s popular rides, students were required to complete physics worksheets created for this trip, where they were asked to perform basic motion and force calculations. They were also encouraged to take pictures and post their experience online. The hashtags for the day were #ypsixflags and #ypphysicsday; several freshman posted pictures on popular social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
Science Department Chair Dr. Nicole Grimes, who organized the trip, said: “It was a wonderful experience for our students to see physics come to life and to observe how it is applicable in so many areas.”
