After over a week of collecting canned and boxed food items from the entire student body, the front of the York Prep School lobby was overtaken by bags and boxes of donations. On Tuesday, November 22, English teacher Mr. Ethan Pennington and Jump Start teacher Ms. Loretta Morante-Rhodes rounded up the Middle School SGO members to bring some order to the chaos and deliver all of the donated food our local firehouse. Mr. Pennington was quick to notice that “firefighting, it turns out, is still the “coolest” job in the city according to our students.”
After gathering up all of the items, the students (along with a few charitable teachers) spent their lunch period walking the few blocks over to Engine Company 40, Ladder 35, on Amsterdam Avenue to make this year’s donation to City Harvest. A nonprofit operating in New York City to rescue and distribute food, City Harvest has rescued more than 500 million pounds of food since 1982. York Prep’s Middle School SGO was very proud of their efforts to contribute to this number and pleased to learn that they had collected over 200 pounds of food for this Thanksgiving.
