For weeks the halls and classrooms were abuzz with the news that MacArthur Genius and Broadway star Mr. Lin-Manuel Miranda would be visiting York Prep School. Students wrote questions for him and teachers incorporated some of his work into lesson plans, all in preparation for his visit. To get a private talk with such a talented composer, lyricist, actor and director is a rare opportunity and every student, faculty member and parent was invited to attend. At noon on Thursday, November 12, everyone filed into the auditorium at Christian Science Church in order to see this musical theater idol in person. With so many having seen his interviews on 60 Minutes and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the auditorium was awash with the excited chatter of children while the soundtrack of the sold-out Broadway smash hit Hamilton played in the background.
Even better than the soundtrack, however, was the real life singing and rapping done by Mr. Miranda himself as he explained the life and times of the lead (which he himself performs), Alexander Hamilton. And afterwards, during the question and answer part of the assembly, Mr. Miranda was kind enough to freestyle at the request of one of our high school students. To the beatboxing of senior Charlie Stevens, Mr. Miranda used his rhyming talents to create an original rap about York Prep pride! All were impressed and at the end of the assembly a large handful of students lingered behind for autographs and selfies, excited to shake the hand of such a inspirational speaker and great role model.
