History Students Attend Law Symposium

Representatives from Mr. Michael Roper’s History classes attended a symposium for high school students sponsored by the New York City Bar Association on Saturday, April 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Twenty juniors and seniors joined judges, lawyers, and other high school students from the New York area to learn what is behind the law and recent Supreme Court decisions and to discuss how the Constitution affects our lives. Speakers included the Honorable Jeffrey Lebowitz and the Honorable Daniel Lewis.

Students selected two discussion sessions from the following topics:

  • The Right to Vote
  • School Searches and the right to be Left Alone
  • Torture and Cruel and Unusual Punishment in the Terrorist Context

Materials, posted in advance, contained factual background on each case along with discussion questions.

At the conclusion of the symposium, students received a certificate of participation.
