On Sunday, October 25 two brave young women and York Prep faculty advisors braved the autumn chill to introduce a handful of lucky students to the great outdoors. The Great Outdoors Club is new to York this year and was created with the sole intent of getting kids up and out of the city on the weekends. Primarily a hiking club, the group will visit various trails and ascents but for their first foray into the wild, four high school students climbed Mt. Beacon.
It was a lot of fun and a great experience for the kids that went. So much so that, in the past week, interest in the club has grown dramatically and they are already making plans for their next hike with more kids (and any faculty who are interested). On Sunday, the group climbed to the top of Mt. Beacon and then steeled their nerves for the final ascent up the fire tower. The kids made four miles seem like a walk in the park, and none of them can wait for the next trip! If anyone is interested in spending a Sunday getting in touch with nature (as well as getting a good workout) please don’t hesitate to contact Ms. Ruby Disko or Coach Janine Turcio.
