English Teacher’s Poem Published in New York Times

The Barbarous Century

Leah Umansky Book Cover

York Prep head of the English department and an accomplished poet, Leah Umansky was featured in the New York Times Magazine section this past weekend. The poem, from her new collection, “The Barbarous Century,” draws inspiration from HBO’s hit fantasy television series Game of Thrones. Poet Terrance Hayes selected “I Want To Be Stark [Like],”  one of many Game of Thrones inspired poems written by Ms. Umansky, for publication.

Ms. Umansky, who earned a master’s degree in poetry at Sarah Lawrence College, is the author of four books of poetry, including “Don Dreams and I Dream” (a Mad Men-inspired chapbook) and “The Barbarous Century,” published last month by Eyewear Publishing. Ms. Umansky’s new collection can be purchased on amazon and you can read more of her poems on the Poetry Foundation website.

Congratulations Ms. Umansky on yet another milestone in your artistic career. We are all very proud of you and happy to have had you share your talent here at York Prep for eleven years!
