English Teacher Featured in The New York Times

York Prep English teacher and poet Leah Umansky was published in the New York Times Learning Center’s Poetry Pairing on January 8th. Her Game of Thrones inspired poem, “Khaleesi Says,” (also published in Poetry Magazine) was featured online alongside an article by  Times Op-Ed columnist Maureen Dowd. Additionally, her second book, Don Dreams and I Dream, a Mad Men-inspired chapbook (a small book of poetry), was featured in Time Out New York as one of “10 Chapbooks to Read Now.”

Leah Umansky has used her love of poetry to inspire young writers at York for the past eight years, having acted as an advisor for both the school’s literary magazine, Genesis, and the school newspaper, The Paw. Every year, Leah continues to find interesting ways to endear her students towards poetry, such as visiting Poet’s House in Battery Park or the biennual Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival. Her students and colleagues could not be any more proud of her accomplishments.
