On Saturday, April 16, Ecuador was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that caused widespread damage. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Manabi province located on the country’s coastline. Many cities and villages were devastated and, in the aftermath, thousands were displaced from their homes. Over 650 people lost their lives and over 16,000 people were injured in the disaster. York Prep Spanish teacher, Ms. Pamela Mejia, was touched by the event and initiated a school-wide fundraiser for the month of April. Students have filled envelopes in their homerooms and the money is being sent to the Ecuadorian Red Cross to aid in the relief efforts. “It has been really heartbreaking to see my country go through this,” says Mejia, “but I am so overjoyed by the spirit of generosity here at York Prep. It shows what a caring community we are.” On Friday April 29th, the physical education department will be hosting a Student v.s. Faculty Basketball Game after school. Contributions raised at the event will also go directly to the Ecuador Relief Fundraiser. Anyone interested in doing their part to contribute towards this very worthy cause should not hesitate to contact Ms. Mejia directly.
