Once again, York Prep’s award-winning literary magazine, Genesis, proves itself to be among the best of the best. Last year’s 2017 Spring issue of Genesis won first place from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) in their annual contest and review for scholastic yearbooks, magazines and newspapers.
For the second time in a row, adviser Leah Umansky submitted Genesis to NCTE – National Council of Teachers of English. Just like last year, the merit of members of literary magazine hoped they had done enough to impress the Council. Surprisingly, Genesis has once again published something excellent enough to be recognized in the Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines: PRESLM. This year, the NCTE Contest has awarded Genesis the category of “Excellent”. For the 2017 contest there were a total of 372 entries and 37 from schools in New York. In their email to Ms. Umansky the NCTE said “You have inspired a love of writing and built a community around the written word that your students will remember for the rest of their lives.” Way to go Ms. Umansky and the entire Genesis team!
