The 2010 Boys’ Varsity Volleyball season kicked off last week with a tough game against one of the strongest teams in our league, St. George Academy.
After dropping a tough first set (29-27), York stormed back to win the next three games (25-16, 25-18, and 25-14). The combination of strong serving and killer hits repeatedly broke through St. George’s defense. York hitters—led by Colin Saint-Vil, Jake Klarberg, and Lucas Tatarsky—totaled 37 kills in the match.
Keibu Morton, Derek Rohlfing, and Richard Martin also added to York’s outstanding offense in the game. John Hayes made a huge contribution to the team late in the third game, coming off the bench after an injury to Klarberg. “John came in with some great blocks and several big hits to keep our momentum going when we really needed it,” said Coach Durnford.
This strong start signals the potential for an outstanding season for Boys’ Volleyball. The team finished third in the PSAA last season, but the players have set their sights on a championship this year. “We have a good team with big hitters and solid blocking,” said Joe Bascom. “I think we have a real chance to win York’s first PSAA volleyball championship.”
York’s upcoming volleyball season will feature games against traditional rivals UNIS and Evangel Christian. The team also will meet up with Catholic high school super-power Xaverian in early April. The boys’ next game of the season is at home against Solomon Schechter on Thursday, March 18.
