After the end of sixth period on Thursday, October 29, the York Prep Panthers boarded a bus headed for Red Hook just like any other match. However that afternoon was the final match in the ISAL playoffs and by that evening the team found they were the 2015 ISAL Champions. After a heated game in which both teams played their hearts out, the boys from York finally beat out the team from Brooklyn Friends with an overtime game winner scored by A.J. Levene (York Prep All-Time Leading Scorer and Single Season Scorer). Cheered on by a fan bus full of panther pride, the young men of the varsity soccer team clinched the title with a final score of 3-2.
These young men worked hard all season to reach this point and they gave it their all in every game finishing 6 and 2 in the ISAL. In their semi-finals match up against Rudolf Steiner they showed similar grit, again winning in overtime with a score of 2-1. A particularly great shot by Umair Amla tied up that game with just five mutes left giving Connor Lieberman a chance to score the winning goal.
Reaping the benefits of their dedication to both the sport and their teammates, the guys were congratulated by Mr. Stewart and the entire school at the start of the Halloween Spooktacular assembly on Friday, October 30. With York’s first soccer championship since 2003, the team made the entire York community proud. They should feel pleased with the success of their season as they look forward to nine returning starters next fall and an opportunity to continue their championship streak.
