Boys’ Varsity Basketball Wins Big Apple Title

Capping a perfect 10-0 league record, the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team attained a major goal for the season by winning the I.S.A.L.’s Big Apple Conference title on February 4. Earlier in the week they routed Lycée Français behind sophomore Shane Richards’ 45 points.

The final league game pitted the Panthers against a Garden team seeking to avenge its only league loss in an earlier game with York. Playing without leading scorer Shane Richards, York took control of a tight game in the final minutes to win by 12. The Panthers were led by senior Lucas Tatarsky’s 40 points, most of which were off of fellow senior Tor Watts’ assists. Senior Keith Coulston also added 12 points while shutting down Garden’s biggest threat.

The conference champs, 15-1 overall, now go for their second goal–an I.S.A.L. playoff championship–the final week of February. Led throughout the season by the big three of Shane Richards, Lucas Tatarsky, and Tor Watts, the squad also owes its success to the selfless play by the rest of the lineup. Role players have stepped up in different games, always ready when called upon. This season has already seen huge road wins at Fieldston and Packer.

Congratulations to the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team and Coach Doug Hill!
