The 2013-2014 Boys’ Junior Varsity Basketball Team enjoyed an amazing winter, emerging I.S.A.L. champions!
The season began with York Prep’s annual scrimmage against Morris High School, whom the JV Panthers had never conquered. Their 49-46 victory against Morris raised the team’s awareness of how outstanding they could become with continued hard work. The Junior Varsity then won its two pre-season games against St. Ann’s and Bay Ridge Prep, providing the squad with confidence and solid preparation for its regular season schedule.
As league play progressed, the players developed identity and strength as a defensive-minded team that enjoyed creating and scoring points off turnovers. This aggressive style allowed York Prep to go undefeated in league play. Although very happy with that accomplishment, Coach Albert Broadus and his well-coached athletes nevertheless realized that, in order for the season to be considered a complete success, the Panthers had to prevail in the playoffs.
And prevail they did! The Junior Varsity focused with even greater intensity in the playoffs – the final two games of the year. In the first game, the JV decisively beat Churchill 71-43 to advance to the finals against last year’s champions, Birch Wathen Lenox. In the championship game, the team delivered its best defensive effort of the year, dominating BWL 48-18.
The season was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for the coach and players. Coach Broadus said: “We accomplished something that we will all remember for the rest of our lives. We also have a strong core of players returning who are looking forward to the challenge of defending our title next year.”
