Basketball players Mara Hutton and Alec Kerdell are February’s Athletes of the Month!
With the end of the winter sports season, all of York’s showed the true grit and determination it takes to compete and be a part of a team. The impressive season for York’s basketball teams are evidence of that hard work and the latest Athletes of the Month were both great assets to the season. Both Mara and Alec received great praise for their performance this winter with Athletic Director Peter Bianco and their coaches, expressing their pride in these two student athletes whose profiles will be displayed in the Pantherdome over the rest of the month.
Alec had a phenomenal season from start to finish. In the month of February, he was the leading scorer tallying numerous three pointers in key spots which gave the Panthers the edge they needed to advance to their first New York State Association of Independent Schools Tournament (NYSAIS) win in over 10 years. His performance helped clinch a 1st place birth in the Independent School Athletic League (ISAL), win the ISAL Tournament and propel the Panthers to victory in the opening round of the NYSIAS Tournament against Bay Ridge Prep. His excellence on and off the court has proven him to be the Athlete of the Month for February.
Without Mara’s determination, leadership, and all around athletic abilities, the York Prep Varsity Girls Basketball team would not have been as successful as they were. Mara was a go-to player that the team could always rely on. She was able to step up in any circumstance, and even learning different position on the court! She made several key baskets this season and she always made sure the team was on their game. She was such a pleasure to coach and will definitely be missed in future years.
