Prior to boarding the Atlantis for the York Prep 2015 Junior-Senior Prom, upperclassmen and their faculty chaperones, all impeccably attired, walked the red carpet along Pier 59 at Chelsea Piers and were interviewed by the school weekly news broadcast, WYRK Television. Not a single hair was out of place as each student showed off their ensemble and took a moment to straighten a corsage, boutonniere, or tie. After the initial flurry of camera flashes, the group made ready to set sail for their cruise around New York City which included a delicious dinner, dancing and some ice cream for dessert.
Luckily, the temperature on Thursday, May 14, was a mild 72 degrees, with abundantly clear skies and only a slight breeze which made for quite a calm night out on the Hudson. But the spirit of celebration was anything but calm as students and teachers alike danced the night away. Indeed, though every inch of the Atlantis is insulated to provide the most comfortable and quiet ride for passengers, this prom had not a single quiet moment to speak of thanks to a DJ who played all the latest hits. There was a definite party atmosphere, as everyone mingled on the decks and the dance floor, dressed to impress and smiling for hundreds of selfies.
One of the nicest luxury yachts in the New York harbor, the Atlantis offered a glamorous grand staircase to allow for each young lady to have that cliche yet undeniably picturesque entrance in her formal attire. With three different decks, there was plenty of room for the nearly 200 guests to enjoy themselves, whether they were eating and dancing in the balloon-filled formal dining room on the first deck, lounging on the next level, or enjoying the views from the top, open air deck. In fact, everyone’s favorite part of the night was the spectacular panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, including that evening’s beautiful sunset. Certainly a sight these young people will remember for quite some time.
