Fundamentals of Reading I

Fundamentals of Reading I offers a challenging curriculum focused on literature, grammar, mechanics, and writing. Students will learn various skills and strategies in reading in order to improve in the five elements of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension. In addition, students will learn basic writing skills and strategies, beginning with sentence structure and moving towards planning and writing paragraphs. Throughout the course, focus will be on various text structures, including narrative, expository, main-idea/detail text structure, non-fiction, compare and contrast, cause and effect relationships and sequencing.
