History 11: Russian History

This elective introduces the history of a remarkable country from its origins in Kievan Rus to the political upheavals of the last thirty years that have culminated in the rule of Vladimir Putin its attempt to establish a democracy. From Ivan the Terrible, Catherine the Great, and the Romanovs to Lenin, Stalin, and Putin, students will learn the major figures responsible for such social change and will follow a country as it expands past its own borders to indoctrinate others in its worldview. Students will think critically, read primary and secondary resources, write papers, and make presentations, to enhance their understanding of this complex nation.
