All seniors begin the year with a semester course in essay writing with the overarching goal of preparing students for the challenges of writing college-level essays. The primary focus is mastering sophisticated patterns of development within expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing. An essential element of senior English is an emphasis on one-on-one conferences with teachers in order to develop a writer’s voice. Revision and peer commentary are vital components of the writing process. Readings are analyzed for rhetorical consideration and for literary merit.
The following is a representative list of works used in the College Writing Seminar: A Basic Writing Guide with Readings; The Tempest; Othello; The Art of Racing in the Rain; other poetry, prose, and non-fiction essays drawn from contemporary sources.
