Ninth grade English focuses on the four main genres of literary expression: drama, poetry, the novel, and the short story. Emphasis is on literary analysis, written expression, and the development of lifelong readers and writers. Extra attention is given to the writing process; students edit and revise multiple drafts as they learn to elaborate on and support ideas with textual evidence and clarity. Writing conferences with peers and teachers provide opportunities for reflection and discussion. Formal grammar instruction, vocabulary development, and a review of reading and writing skills prepare students for the PSAT. Technology is integrated by using wikis as a venue for online discussion and as a part of the independent projects completed by the end of the year.
The following is a representative list of books read in 9th Grade English classes: Lord of the Flies; The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian; To Kill a Mockingbird; Maus- A Survivor’s Tale; Romeo and Juliet; Twelve Angry Men.
