If your child is too ill to come to school, please do not send him/her to school. Please keep children home until they are feeling better or have been examined by a doctor. This will help reduce the spread of illness in the school.
When a student is absent from school, his/her parent is expected to call the Reception Desk Office at (212) 362-0400 before 8:30 a.m. to inform the school of the absence. Students may not call to report their own absences. Upon returning to school, a student who has been absent is expected to present a note to their dean, signed by a parent, guardian or doctor. The note must contain the name of the student, the date or dates of absence, and the reason for absence. After a three-day absence, a student is required to bring in a doctor’s note.
The only valid reasons for absence are student illness, death in the family or religious holidays. The school administration may grant an excused absence in cases other than those listed when the absence is warranted.
Medical or dental appointments should not be made during the school day. Unless the medical or dental appointment is of an emergency nature, make-up work will not be allowed. It is expected that such appointments will be scheduled after school.
Students missing classes for religious reasons must submit written notification to the appropriate dean prior to the holiday.
York Prep does not allow vacations or extended absences that occur during scheduled school days. Assignments will not be given in advance to students taking an unauthorized vacation.
Extra days taken before or after vacation has ended are not permitted. Make-up work in this situation will not be allowed; a student will receive a “0” for the work missed.
