Sophomore Honored in Poetry Contest

1/24/2013

Congratulations to 10th grade student Jordan Isaacs on being chosen one of ten finalists for the Eichner Award for Young Poets. Her poems stood out among 167 entries from around the country.

The Eichner Award for Young Poets is conducted annually and open to all young women, ages 14-18, who are enrolled in a secondary school in the U.S. The judge this inaugural year was the prominent poet Cate Marvin, author of three books of poetry; the recipient of the Kathryn A. Morton Prize, the Kate Tufts Discovery Prize, and a Whiting Award; and co-founder of the nonprofit organization VIDA: Women in Literary Arts.

Jordan's English teacher, Ms. Leah Umansky (a published poet herself), said: "
We did a two-week poetry unit, and I posted the guidelines for the contest on Edline. Jordan was clearly inspired and took the initiative to submit to the contest. I’m so proud of her!"
