At York Prep, we foster a sense of community among our students. Along with their focus on academics, students gain valuable experiences through community service. Community service facilitates civic engagement and makes students aware of and sensitive to the needs of humanity.

York Prep students do not limit themselves to service in their local communities. Many have traveled to developing countries to assist in the construction of schoolhouses, bridges, and parks while immersing themselves in a culture other than their own. Students are also encouraged to get involved in school-wide activities such as sports, theatre, the school newspaper, school yearbook, and other extracurricular activities.

York Prep’s community service requirement is 25 hours per year of high school attendance. This may seem like a high standard for a private high school in New York City, but we expect all of our students to rise to the challenge. While some students are diligent about volunteering on an ongoing basis throughout the year, others prefer to do a major community service project during their summer vacations.

York Prep students have recently completed service for organizations such as The New York Botanical Garden, Global Works (Costa Rica), Prospect Park Alliance, Central Park Conservancy, ASPCA, York Environmental Club, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Farmers’ Museum, American Red Cross, Children for Children, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Volunteers for Israel, JCC, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, UNICEF, Congregation Rodeph Sholom, St. Joan of Arc Youth Group, and Habitat for Humanity.
